I figured that I should start off my reviews with my most favorite/most repurchased tea. This happens to be Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Kids Goodnight Grape Herbal Tea. Not only is this tea caffeine free, but it has an added benefit of Vitamin C. Granted, one tea bag only has 20% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C, but Vitamin C nonetheless.
On Celestial Seasonings website, Sleepytime Kids Goodnight Grape Herbal Tea is described as,
“Here’s the first Sleepytime® tea made just for kids! Goodnight Grape features the relaxing Sleepytime blend of herbs many of us have loved since we were children, but it’s naturally sweetened, packs a bright and pleasing grape aroma and flavor, and provides 20% of your daily Vitamin C per serving. Kids of all ages will enjoy it served hot or over ice.” —Charlie Baden, Celestial Seasonings Blendmaster
Ingredients
Chamomile, Natural Grape Flavor with other Natural Flavors, Lemongrass, Tilia Flowers, Spearmint, Natural Sweetener (Stevia Extract, Soy Lecithin), Blackberry Leaves, Orange Blossoms, Hawthorne, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), and Rosebuds.
My Take on the Tea
This is definitely a tea that you can drink plain. Extra sweetener is not needed because it already adds a punch of sweetness. I have not tried this tea with milk, but I can't imagine that it would taste very good.
This is the tea that I reach for at night when I'm craving something sweet, but do not want the unnecessary calories after dinner.
As I was doing research on the ingredients, I learned that Tilia Flowers (also known as Linden Flowers) is one of the herbs that give Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Kids Goodnight Grape Herbal Tea the non-narcotic sedative that makes it a Sleepytime Tea. Hawthorne is also an ingredient that will help alleviate anxiety just as Tilia Flowers do. (Just as a disclaimer: I did read on the University of Maryland Medical Center's website that Hawthorne is not recommended for children. I will link the website below.) Orange Blossoms are also used to help add a mild sedating effect.
This tea has a slight mint and lemongrass flavor, but in my opinion the grape flavoring is more poignant. You can tell that this tea has chamomile in it, but it is not overpowering. To some degree this tea reminds me of a grape Popsicle (only warm instead of frozen). The aroma of this tea is mostly grape and slightly minty. The grape smell is slightly artificial, but pleasant nonetheless.
This tea does not sedate me in a way that something such as Nyquil would. I feel a slight calming effect, but it does not put me to sleep. I generally drink this tea for the flavor and not for the "Sleepytime" effect.
Celestial Seasonings definitely did a fantastic job with this tea!
